Literary legend and infamous New York denizen Norman Mailer died early this morning. Mailer will forever be known as one of the pioneers of “New Journalism”, and his work has, arguably, influenced an entire generation of young writers. Expect a longer tribute to come, either on this page or in the paper. While Mailer’s novels are certainly worth reading, I would suggest starting with his 1960 Esquire essay, “Superman Comes to the Supermarket”, about John F. Kennedy. It is truly unique political writing. And for that, Mailer will be missed.
