múm @ St. Paul the Apostle

This past Friday, Icelandic electronic/experimental band múm played a beautiful set in the Church of St. Paul the Apostle. The concert was part of the Wordless Music Series, a program designed to bring indie/electronic acts together with classical musicians. Opening for múm were both Torngat, a sometimes-improvisational three-piece band from Montreal, and Jihyun Kim, a talented young cellist who recently graduated from Juilliard. Aside from the convenience of St. Paul’s being half a block away from FCLC, the church proved to be a wonderful setting for the show. The amazing geometry of the space, combined with the simple yet appealing light display that appeared behind the performers, made for a space that beautifully accompanied the ambient, crescendoing aspects of the music. Get your tickets (by signing up on the WMS list or going to Other Music) now for the next Wordless Music event to be held at St. Paul’s–the U.S. premiere of Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s symphony, Popcorn Superhet Receiver, which will be performed on January 16th and 17th.

It’s really cool that they do shows at the Church; I can’t wait to see Johnny Greenwood’s piece!

I recorded both mum shows this weekend with the permission of the band, and have posted them for download on my site.
